Melancholia

Thus is my mood.

I worry a lot. I am a huge worrier, and always have been for as long as I can remember. The feeling is part of my everyday, and since I’m so inside my head, it’s hard for me to discern the nonsense from the serious… So everything becomes categorized as a Code-Red-Danger-Will-Robinson situation.

I’ve been in something of a slump lately when it comes to doing those serious business things – in my case, really thinking and planning out my near future and making preparations for them. I always try to take things one step at a time, since there’s no point in freaking out about step 10 when I haven’t even gotten to step 1.

So, in procrastinating during the three day weekend, I somehow stumbled onto a popular goth youtuber’s channel. I don’t necessarily identify with this subculture, but It’s Black Friday is fun and interesting to look at, and also seems really nice and has a generally positive message and attitude in her videos. I watched quite a few of her videos, but one in particular really resonated with me:

It wasn’t her situation in particular that I identify with, but her message and her outlook that I admire. Faced with tough choices, she ultimately did what’s right for her in striving for happiness, and that’s something I think is really brave.

Another thing I did to procrastinate was redress a couple of my dolls.

Rory (top) is wearing a shirt by MINIJIJO, pants by Missblythe2012, and stock shoes. I put her hair in a fish tail braid. Elowyn (bottom) is wearing a shirt by C’mon Dolly, skirt by Missblythe2012, and stock shoes (I actually switched Elowyn’s shoes out to pink converses and put these ankle boots on Rory). I like how Rory looks in red!

I have to get back to crafting for my dolls, but making human size things (socks…) has kind of taken over my life XD. Glad to be starting the work week on a Tuesday, and I hope everyone had a great holiday weekend or just weekend (depending on where you are in the world)!

New things! Finished things!

My Missblythe2012 order came in today! Yay! I ordered an outfit for my (kind of neglected) Hujoo Janus – who is waiting patiently for a face up, and two bottoms for my Blythe girls ^^. Ahhhh I’m so happy with my order! The items are so cute, especially the pants!

I also finished the socks I was working on ^^. It was so satisfying to have finished making these things, because (1) they knitted up relatively fast for someone who only knew how to knit and purl, (2) they fit, (3) they’re comfy, and (4) I’ve never made socks before! I’m tempted to make another pair of these socks, but try to incorporate a different color for the heels and toes, rather than to try a new pattern. I haven’t made up my mind though.

Also, for the first time in my yarn-centric hobby, I’ve really splurged on a skein of yarn XD. I ordered this hand-dyed skein from Dyedinthewoolyarnco. It’s so beautiful – I had to have it. It reminds me of both an Easter egg and Madeline Hatter.

not my photo. from dyedinthewoolyarnco.

I will be making a shawlette with this gorgeous yarn :3. I treated myself ^^.

Can’t wait for the three day weekend!

Highlights from Today’s Blythe Meet

Tons o’ fun, and quite the turn-out for today’s Blythe Meet. I was stoked to have been able to see a K07doll custom in person (the blue haired custom on the upper right), and I can confirm that the doll is amazingly cute in person as it is in photos ^^.

EXHAUSTED! And feeling quite talked out, since I don’t normally do much socializing. I’m really happy that there’s a somewhat active Blythe community in my area. The meets are a fun gathering of like-minded people, who just genuinely love Blythes/dolls. It also gives me the opportunity to meet new people in the community, and in some cases, put a face to a username, or owners to the doll.

Shopaholic

I went on a bit of a clothing shopping spree for my girls, partially because I kept running into a “you guys have nothing to wear!” situation, and I tend to make small feel-good purchases when I’m having off-days. I’m still waiting for one more order I made on etsy, but I did get two packages in this week.

Yep. Another Plastic Fashion dress. This one is in an adorable unicorn print with hearts and gingham. I really covet my Plastic Fashion dresses, as they look great both on a doll, or even just stacked together.

I also bought 2 second hand dresses from Facebook, and the seller was super nice and included some adorable extras ^^. I purchased the two brown and blue checkered dresses (both I recognized as by the etsy seller Sleepforever), and the smock type top, the floral skirt, and the tiny rubber chicken were delightful surprises :3. I couldn’t wait to get my new clothes on my girls, and I thought it would be cute if Marina and Reese matched, since their hair color is very similar.

Reese needs some kind of accessory, but I’ll figure it out later. Marina looks fly XD.

As for knitting, I’ve made quite a bit of progress on my sock!

I’m actually a little further along with the sock since I took this photo. I’ve learned that for next time… It would probably be a good idea if I kept track of the number of rows I make, that way I can make an identical second sock (oops!).

Happy Friday everyone!!

Sock progress

The Knitpicks bare sock yarn I recently dyed is slowly but surely becoming a sock!

week 1

week 2

week 2

I’m really enjoying knitting with this ball of yarn! I like when there’s a row of very saturated color – it’s so happy :3.

I’m using the Rose City Rollers sock pattern. I feel like I’m learning a ton of new knitting techniques as I’m working through the pattern. It’s definitely slow going, and I’m not used to projects taking me so long. I’m excited to try making dolly sized things with this yarn.

I also decided to put Rory in the red dress I received in a recent swap. I love how it looks on her, and it brings out the reddish tones in her hair. I also don’t have anything quite like it in my doll wardrobe, so I kind of want to put Finley in it next to see how she looks. … Speaking of doll clothes, >_< I’m expecting three packages of doll clothes in the mail (woops).

I’m feeling a major need to declutter!

Doll Shelf Goals

I’ve learned that I value variety in my Blythe collection. It’s easier for me to justify adding a new blythe to the family if I don’t already own a similar doll. Also, it helps me keep my wishlist finite.

Here’s the line up right now (listed left to right):

26013250793_f8b2cca42b_k

  • Finley – Cadence Majorette, RBL+, long white-blonde hair with straight across bangs and a center part. Chantilly Lace custom girl.
  • Reese – Completely stock Wendy Weekender. FBL, medium length wavy mint blue hair with straight across bangs and a center part.
  • Marina – Factory blythe, long wavy teal hair with straight across bangs and a center part. Project dollhouse custom girl.
  • Rory – Factory blythe with Didee Eureka scalp, reddish brown curly hair with straight across bangs and a center part. Custom girl by me.
  • Elowyn – Completely stock Cherie Babette. Translucent FBL, short dark brown hair with straight across bangs and a center part.

Here are some traits I’m hoping to add to my doll collection:

  • Girl with no bangs – All my girls have straight across bangs!
  • Girl with side part – All my girls have center parts 😦
  • BL mold
  • Hair Colors – Pink, Red, and Blonde/Ash Brown
  • A girl with all special chips

Mondrian has been on my wishlist for quite a while, and she would knock off BL, no bangs, and blonde hair from my list.

Royal Soliloquy is also often on my wishlist, but she kind of floats on and off of it.

Her overall look is quite striking and very elegant… but  sometimes I find this doll off-putting. RoSo would knock off red hair, all special chips, and no bangs from my list. I think it may be that the stark contrast between her hair, and her pale skin tone, as well as the bold coloring of her stock and her features makes her look a bit severe.

I’ve been splurging a bit on my hobbies, but I’ve been pretty good about not adding another blythe to my shelf. I think the next thing on my To-Do list will be to konmari my doll wardrobe.

Yarn, yarn, and some more yarn

My Knitpicks order came! I ordered quite a bit more than I expected too in order to reach the $50 free shipping.

By far, way nicer yarn than I have used in a while. Everything in my stash before this haul was purchased from Michaels, and either cotton or acrylic. For my Knitpicks order, I ordered two Bare skeins for dyeing, 6 skeins of sock yarn (stroll I think), 1 skein of lace weight mohair, and 1 skein of alpaca yarn if I remember correctly (I might be wrong XD). I already dyed one of the bare yarns yesterday, along with the other half of the practice yarn I purchased from Michaels. Behold!

By the way, winding the pink/yellow skein was a nightmare. I literally stood over a table for three hours trying to wind the yarn into a ball without ending up with a tangled mess. I’m quite pleased with my results for this round of dyeing! This time I used food coloring and kool aid powder. I found that the kool aid powder is especially good for getting a speckle effect.

The blue/green practice yarn has become a part of a pair of slippers and a merit badge. ^^ The slippers are kind of ugly but soooo comfortable and easy to make. The merit badge is quite cute! I have it hanging as a charm on one of my purses.

(don’t mind my feet plz D:)

I’m really happy with how the blue/green skein came out! For my other bare yarn skein, I might try to recreate the effect. I was a bit reserved with my pink/yellow skein because I was worried I’d end up with a rainbow tiedye skein again.

Happy Mother’s Day everyone!

Clearly obsessed with yarn

This week has been a bit spendy for me, what with birthdays, bad days which called for retail therapy, and this crafty mood I’ve been in. ^^ I’m currently waiting on my Knitpicks order, which is set to deliver tomorrow, and I recently went to the Lion Brand Studio and picked up some items.

I picked up two sets of Hiya Hiya Sharp double pointed needles in size 0 and 1. The needles I currently own were all purchased from Michaels, and are either Boye or Clover brand. The Boye, I think are made of aluminum, and the DPNs that I use the most (size 1) are all bent! I decided to invest in nicer needles, and I’m so glad I did. I noticed that the Hiya Hiyas are easier to get into stitches and smoother. I also picked up the needle measuring thingamabob, because I have some needles purchased way back when I was learning to knit in elementary school of unknown size.

I also think I’m ready to try a new pattern XD. I’ve made a sleeveless version of the Blythe Raglan x-long sleeve sweater by Kimberly Kwon about six times with varying success (that’s the pattern in the background that I printed out and kind of worked off of). I’ve yet to really sit down and tackle sleeves, because I hate trying to pick up stitches onto a needle again.

I dunno why, but with the two Blythe tops I’ve made, I felt compelled to make one in each color of yarn I have! I actually finished the skein of the thin yarn in the blue shade, which I’m super proud of. Rory is currently wearing the mustard yellow one I made.

One more thing:

Here is how the yarn I dyed looks after being crocheted! Look all the colors! This rectangle is going to become one slipper, and once I dye the second half of the practice skein, that will become the other slipper.

Now I’m off to bed! Eta 2 days til Saturday.

Feeling that need to make things

I had a particularly hard week last week, made worse by a particularly terrible first session with a new counselor, who instead of helping me with my anxiety increased it by tenfold. I was relieved when the weekend came (but you know, also anxious because of how quickly time is passing by). Instead of falling into a stress-induced rut, I decided to get crafty.

So I made a big KnitPicks order (because that’s what I do when I’m feeling down- I eat and spend money), which includes two skeins of bare yarn for hand-dyeing! I was really inspired to attempt dyeing yarn after watching an episode of the podcast Knitting with Dolls. I did some more research and found these tutorials quite useful (KnitPicks, Chalklegs, Instructables).

Naturally, I decided I couldn’t wait for my order to arrive, so I went to Michaels and bought a skein of Patons worsted wool yarn and 4 bottles of food coloring (blue, pink, yellow, and red). I literally had no plan when I decided to attempt dyeing the yarn. Here is the result:

I was just like, ALRIGHT LET’S DO THIS. (/insert World of Warcraft reference here).

yarn-dyeing_26484915820_o

I dyed a skein that reminds me of when I tie-dyed shirts as a kid. XD This wasn’t quite what I was going for, but I at least divided the skein into two hanks, so I can practice dyeing again before attempting it on the nicer skeins I purchased from KnitPicks. I need to figure out how to mix the four colors I have to make more colors, that are less neon. I’m not sure what to make with this…

I also made some more shrinky dinks (my sister asked for Neko Atsume ones) and some dish clothes (for my mom).

I really enjoyed making the dish cloths, and followed this pattern in order to achieve that waffle look. They’re a bit sloppy, but I made them with scrap yarn, and they’re not meant to last forever.

One more thing I want to mention – :3 I received the swap package I mentioned from my dolly friend. I was anticipating its arrival because I like to stalk my packages on the USPS website. I was ecstatic when I saw the contents of the package.

My friend and I did a swap – crocheted and knitted things for sewn things. I’m blown away by how well-made the shirts and the dress are, with all the tiny details (tinnnyyy buttons), and the adorable fabrics. She also made the kanzashi style hair clip. I don’t have enough shirts in my doll wardrobe, nor long dresses, so these are welcome additions. The package really brightened up my day. ^^ I put the two shirts on my girls, and haven’t decided who to put in the red dress (I’m torn between Finley and Rory).

Reese is wearing the pink shirt and hairclip from the swap, a tutu from MINIJIJO, white tights, and pink shoes from QMagicDoll.

Elowyn is wearing a beret I knitted, the green shirt from the swap, jeans, and stock shoes.

I hope everyone has an awesome (rest of) Sunday, and Monday flies by painlessly.
